Tsanko Tsankov – the first Bulgarian to swim the dangerous Strait of Gibraltar

Tsanko Tsankov is a Bulgarian swimmer, multiple national, European and World record holder in various swimming styles.

On 09/09/2022, Tsanko Tsankov wrote a new page in the history of open water swimming by winning the swimming marathon in The Strait of Gibraltar.

The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the most difficult and most prestigious swimming in the open water world. The competition takes place in the extremely difficult and unpredictable conditions of the Atlantic Ocean, and the organizers are on the verge of ending the marathon, due to the formation of dense fog in the middle of the strait.

Tsanko Tsankov prevailed over the other 23 participants as covers the distance of 16 km and 750 m in 3 hours, 56 minutes and 3 seconds, according to official time. This is a historic success for Tsanko Tsankov, who is the only Bulgarian who swam the distance from Europe to Africa, with a victory in a prestigious competition and a Grandmaster time.
